The holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year because it’s time spent creating memories with family and friends. However, the holiday season can quickly become stressful and overwhelming with a packed social calendar and spur of the moment guests. Today I’ve partnered with Stella Cheese to share my secret for holiday entertaining made easy – the cheese board.
The cheese board is my go-to for spur of the moment guests and holiday potlucks because it gives an air of sophistication and having one’s act together, when you can really just throw random things from your fridge and pantry on a fancy little board and call it a day.
When I’m planning a cheese board and it’s not a last minute thing, I like to use a soft cheese (Stella Cheese’s fresh mozzarella is my favorite!), a hard cheese, a meat, a fruit, and some type of crackers. Based on the type of cheese I’m serving, I’ll use a beverage pairing website to see which wine or beer goes best with it. If I’m using a cheese I’ve never made a cheeseboard before or want to spice it up a bit, I’ll also utilize the Stella Cheese website for food pairing suggestions.
Like I mentioned earlier, cheese boards are the perfect solution if you’re entertaining in a pinch. Take a quick inventory of what you have in your fridge and in your pantry, and think outside of the box a little bit. I love to snack, so I typically have some dried fruit, raw nuts, and crackers in my pantry that I can use. But then there are the less obvious pantry items like the honey that I use for my green tea and the gourmet spread that I received as a gift. Don’t forget about the (in date) items that are just chilling in your fridge, like the olives I bought the time I thought it would be a great idea to make a classic martini. Just because you’ve never seen it done before, doesn’t mean you can’t do it on your cheese board! Play with texture and contrast.
The last step – do a little 30 second lookup on your cheese. We’ve all been to a party where someone has used words like “light-bodied” or “oaky” to describe wine and wondered what in the world they were talking about. (Okay, maybe it’s just me because I just enjoy drinking wine more than I do describing it.) Whenever I serve a cheese, I use the Stella Cheese website for a quick, three to five word description of my cheese of choice so that I can properly use words like “buttery” and “slightly sharp.”
Okay, after all of those fancy cheese words, you deserve a treat… and you’re in luck! Stella Cheese wants to send one lucky winner on a $5,000 trip to Napa Valley California! Enter here, and keep in mind that you can enter daily.
And if you haven’t already, take a second to explore the Stella Cheese website for recipes, beverage pairings, fancy cheese descriptions, and more! They’re my go-to for purchasing any kind of cheese, and I hope you’ll give them a try when it comes to planning your next holiday party cheese board.
Happy Tuesday, friends! How do you make holiday entertaining easy?
PS – If you’re curious about what’s on the cheese board in the photos, I used Stella Cheese’s Romano, capicola, salami, pita chips, apricots, and walnuts. Romano is “sharp, salty, and tangy.” I love pairing it with dried apricots because they are very soft and sweet.
