When I heard about Lilly’s passing yesterday, my heart was broken. I felt like I had lost a lifelong friend, and I’m sure that I’m not the only one that felt this way.
My obsession with Lilly began when I was a pre-teen. I was on my way to vacation in Florida with my family, and there was an article about the brand’s relaunch in Vanity Fair. (I obviously wasn’t your normal 13 year old. Haha.) I was determined to get my hands on a Lilly dress.
I got my first Lilly dress right the summer before my junior year of college, June 2011. They were finally starting to carry Lilly in the Belk about two hours from where I lived. I had been holding off for awhile – I wanted to wear my first Lilly for something special, and so far, I deemed nothing to be special enough. I had other Lilly items, but no dress.
Vanderbilt Hospital cleared me as cancer free on June 3, 2011. On the way home, Momma insisted that I try on some Lilly dresses. I couldn’t bring myself to purchase one, because I knew that it would show the large scar on my arm caused by surgery. But when we left, I couldn’t get the dress out of my head. Momma surprised me with it, and to this day, it is still my favorite piece of Lilly.
You will never, ever be forgotten, sweet Lilly.
