Listening to Your Body

As you read this, I'm in Cleveland for a work conference.   I can't wait to tell you all about this city and how I've fallen in love with it, but for now I want to tell you why I'm sitting in a hotel room writing this post instead.

When I travel, I feel immense pressure to really explore a city.  Life is so short, and I want to experience as many things and see as many places as possible.  I have really bad FOMO, and when I travel for work, it's like FOMO on steroids.  My schedule is limited because I'm typically working during business hours, so I try to cram my evenings full of cool experiences and delicious food.  On top of that, I'm still adjusting to traveling alone.  I get nervous, and I have to force myself not to hole up in a hotel room for the entire trip.

I've been going non-stop.  So after getting a blister and getting a little lost while trying to get home from my conference, I gave up and hopped in an Uber.  I immediately sunk into my bed, and my body was shaking.  I knew at that point enough was enough.  I cancelled my plans and walked to the gourmet grocery store across the street for a sandwich and fruit, then threw on a cozy hotel robe and called it a night.  While I wanted to see my new friends and mingle with other young professionals, I knew I needed to listen to my body and take a break.

Women are expected to balance it all - work, school, blogging, side projects, families, social lives... you name it.  But when we don't take care of ourselves, we end up like I was tonight - exhausted, physically weak, and anxious.

I hope that as this week gears off, you'll remember to listen to your body.  If you're feeling physically or mentally exhausted, take a little break to let your mind and body rest.  Failing to do so results in burnout, and we can all attest to how not fun that is.

Where I'm at + What's Next

I feel like 2016 has without a doubt been my  biggest year for personal growth.  But despite finally starting to get the hang of this adulting thing and coming into my own and having so many learning experiences that I could be sharing with you, I haven't felt much of a desire to write.

When I was growing up, my mom owned a preschool.  I was surrounded by children from different backgrounds and all different walks of life.  I knew that there were children who had less than me and children who had more than me, and I was raised to treat them all with the same kindness and respect.  But this year, I've really felt a fire lit under me, and I've learned to "check my privilege."

At last month's Junior League meeting, there was a plea for donations of panties and feminine hygiene products.  I learned that in the homeless community, panties are considered a luxury.  And it just totally blew my mind that something that most of us don't even think twice about is considered a luxury item.

And of course there's the elephant in the room - racial tension and innocent lives taken too soon.  There's so much fear in our world, and it just makes me so sad.  I'm sad to see families destroyed, I'm sad to see cities destroyed, I'm sad to see so much violence.  When I sit down to write, these things just cloud my mind, and I can never find the words to say.

While I love my little corner of the internet, I want to be sure that I'm bringing y'all posts of substance.  Pretty pictures are nice, but if my post is nothing but pretty pictures every day, I'm not doing either of us any favors.  I want to help women not only navigate the post-grad world, but I want to help women feel inspired and empowered to make a difference.  There will be still be funny stories  and beauty posts (who wants to take life too seriously?), but my goal is to create more truly meaningful and helpful content to balance that out, and planning that out may take a little bit of time.

I want to end by saying thanks for your support of Seersucker Sass - past, present, and future, but especially during this break my heart for what breaks Yours season of my life.  If you stop by and there hasn't been a post in a while, just send a little prayer or positive vibe my way because I'm probably up to my eyeballs in silent auction items or sitting in a volunteer board meeting that has lasted entirely too long... And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Treating Your Acne Just Got Easier

Have you ever had something bother you and your immediate reaction is Oh, I'll just see a doctor later if it keeps up.  And two months later, its still keeping up, and you still haven't seen a doctor?  That's kind of what has happened with my skin.  I've been battling cystic acne since about a year out of college, and I legitimately had no idea what to do. 

I kept saying I would see a dermatologist, and I finally decided at my last skin checkup I would talk to someone about the acne.  Three biopsies from my lower body later, I made the decision that I actually didn't want to talk about my acne after all.  I'll schedule a follow up, I convinced myself, even though we both know I never did.

My reasons were probably a lot like your reasons.  For starters, visiting the dermatologist can be inconvenient.  In my case, I would have to take time off work and then drive at least thirty minutes to a dermatologist.  Add in a co-pay or large out of pocket fee, plus treatment, plus that adorable little makeup and skin care room they want you to hit up on your way out, and it can get really expensive really fast.  Not only is there inconvenience, but there's discomfort.  I felt really uncomfortable talking about the fact that I'm 25 years old and have acne, especially because I didn't have it as a teen.

When I was given an opportunity to review YoDerm, I did my research and then jumped at the chance.  YoDerm is a three step process - choose your dermatologist, create a medical profile, and receive treatment.  It's fast and simple, so much so that I was able to do it entirely on my lunch break!

By eight that evening, I received a notification that my prescriptions had been called in.  I logged into the portal and easily accessed a list of my prescriptions, a recommendation for a different facial cleanser, and two messages from my doctor.  Any skepticism I had was gone at this point, because in the message he talked about how the medications wouldn't interfere with my infusion or my sensitive skin.  He suggested a two month follow-up.

It took my pharmacy a couple of days to get one of the medications, so I started taking them on Monday, August 29.  I was really nervous about how much the prescriptions would be, but with my insurance the cost of two medications, a topical treatment, and the new facial cleanser was $55.  Prescription coverage varies by provider and plan, and YoDerm does what they can to help minimize the cost of prescriptions by providing resources for prescription coupons.  (The cost of the visit is $60, but if you use my referral link, you receive $10 off your appointment cost.  $50 is my dermatologist co-pay, and to be completely honest with y'all, I'm glad to pay $10 more and have my visits at a time when it's convenient for me instead of having to take time off work, drive 30 minutes out of the way, etc.)

Yesterday was my two week mark, and I'm singing the praises of YoDerm even more.  I expected my skin care regimen simply to help with my acne, but my pores are tinier than they have ever been, and my skin actually glows.  This is the best possible result I could imagine since the days I don't wear makeup outnumber the days that I do wear it.

Less is more.

After what has felt like the summer of sickness, I'm so ready to feel like myself again.  To get there, I've set one goal for this month - Less is more.  Maybe it's more of a guideline than a goal, but regardless, it's something that I will continue to repeat to myself until we get to October and this new way of thinking has become habit.

Less take out, more time in the kitchen.  I'm really ashamed to admit how frequently I have takeout.  There aren't many lunch options by my office, so I typically eat a light lunch and then I'm starving by the time I get home, leading me to just pick up a Chick-fil-a Cobb salad or some chicken tacos from a local tex-mex place.  I don't love cooking, but last week I found myself craving a home cooked meal.  It didn't take me very long, and there was just something so rewarding about making my own meal.  Over the next month, I'm hoping to find some great recipes for cooking for one and for crockpots.  (If you have any favorites, please send them my way!)

Less spending, more planning.  When I don't plan my purchases - whether it be clothing or my lunch - I end up spending more than I should.  I'm really practical with my spending, so feeling like I've wasted money stresses me out.  I think that planning my meals out for the week will be a major way to save money, as I not only spend less on lunch and takeout, but I'll also be able to purchase ingredients that can be used in multiple recipes.  I bought a carton of iced coffee at the store this weekend, so I think that's a great start!

Less time spent in front of a screen, more time spent bettering myself.  I spend all day looking at a computer screen at work, and I hope to do a little less of that when I get home in the evenings.  Instead of just poking around online, I could use that time to read a book or exercise.

Less scrambling, more focusing.  I really don't love getting up when my alarm goes off.  Because of this, I'm always scrambling to get ready in the mornings.  Friday morning I got up early for work to pick up some catering, and I was reminded of just how much better I felt when I got up and got my day started.  Instead of scrambling to accomplish something, I want to be able to focus fully on the task at hand.

Less caffeine, more water.  I usually limit myself to two caffeinated beverages a day - an iced coffee each morning and a diet soda around 3 PM.  But when the month of our big work event rolls around, I am pretty sure my blood type is caffeine.  I've stocked my fridge at home and work with different flavors of LaCroix, and I'm hoping I can stay strong and grab them over soda.

Less dread, more enthusiasm.  Just like everyone else in the world, I have a lot on my plate right now.  Sometimes this leads me to be dread my community involvement just because I feel so overwhelmed and over involved.  So I've decided to approach things that I typically dread with enthusiasm in an attempt to change my mindset.
