Summer Reading List

I know that summer isn't here yet, but it sure feels like it!  School is out, the weather is heating up, and I bought a bikini & denim cutoffs (am I having an identity crisis?) this weekend.  The thing I'm most excited about this summer is actually having time to do things I enjoy, after spending all of last summer studying for the LSAT and transitioning to a new job.  My goal is to do things that are fun and productive (aka not watch Gossip Girl start to finish for a third time), so I'm hoping to do more yoga, paint more, and read more.

Here are the books I hope to have finished by the time fall rolls around:

Summer Reading List 2016

What I Told my Daughter
I picked this up at the library on a whim, and I'm really excited to dig into it.  It's basically a book of advice from successful women to the next generation of women.  I'm excited to soak in some of the wisdom that this book provides!

Summer Reading List 2016

I've loved Curtis Sittenfeld since I read Prep ten years ago, so when I saw that she had written another book, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed.  The story follows Liz, who is from a family of five girls, ages ranging 23-38 and all unmarried, and their mother's desire to marry them off.  All hell breaks loose when the two oldest sisters temporarily move home to take care of their father after a heart attack at the same time that the star of Eligible (a fictional version of The Bachelor) moves to their town to work as a surgeon in the local hospital. It's a modern re-telling of Pride and Prejudice set in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the absurdity of all of the situations are hilarious yet relatable.  I haven't been able to put this book down.

Summer Reading List 2016

Tales from the Back Row
In this book, editor Amy Odell shares an outsider's view into the fashion industry.  In my dream world, I would work in fashion, so I'm really interested in reading Amy's stories about meeting Anna Wintour and how she climbed the ladder in the industry.

Summer Reading List 2016

I would be lying if I said I didn't envy the fact that French women seem so effortlessly chic.  In this book, four French women share their "cool girl" secrets on style, beauty, culture, attitude, and men.  Reviewers have ripped it to pieces on Amazon, but I think it will be a fun read by the pool.

Summer Reading List 2016

Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook
I know I'm preaching to the choir when I say that I'm obsessed with social media.  I use it for blogging and for work, and I've even started doing some consulting on the side.  Despite feeling well versed in it, I still feel like there is so much to learn.  This book comes highly recommended by a social media consultant that I know, so I'm really excited to read it.

With all of that being said, I'm dying to know - What's on your summer reading list?

PS - A lot of y'all have been asking about the devotional that I've been snapping.  You can find it here and the workbook here!  It has rocked my world!

Back to Black

Y'all, I'm not sure what's going on with me.  I usually love color, especially as the weather gets warmer.  But lately I've been gravitating toward black pieces instead of my typical Lilly Pulitzer favorites.

Here are a few things I can't wait to add to my wardrobe, all of them under $100!

black clothing under $100

Sleeveless Romper • Mesh Bikini (top & bottom) • Tie Back Romper
Draper James Mini SkirtFaux Leather ToteShift Dress
Off the Shoulder Top •  Monogrammed RingThin Band • Sunglasses • Fringe Heels

Sleeveless Romper •  I love how versatile this piece is!  It would be perfect dressed up for a GNO or dressed down for a concert.  (PS - If you like backless pieces, this one is open back!)

Mesh Bikini (Top & Bottom) • I've been really loving mesh lately, because it can add a sexy touch to the most simple, basic pieces.  The combined cost of the swimsuit is only $56!! This is at the top of my wishlist.

Tie Back Romper •  I don't have a vacation planned yet for the summer, but I want this to wear on vacation!  Haha.  It's a super easy piece and comes in three other colors.

Draper James Mini SkirtConfession - I bought this today.  When Nicole and I went to Draper James, I tried on this skirt and then tried on the dress that I ended up buying.  But I couldn't stop thinking about this skirt, so I ended up ordering it because it's on sale.  (If you have concerns about the flap in the front, it's basically extra fabric.  There's a normal skirt under there, so a wardrobe malfunction is a little less likely!)

Faux Leather Tote •  I own the reversible version of this bag in nude and blush, and I carry it all of the time!  When I travel, I use it for all of my toiletries, makeup, and hot tools because it's so easy to clean.

Shift DressI can't get over how chic this dress is! It reminds me so much of Twiggy.  It's available in 12 (!!!) colors!

Off the Shoulder TopTwo of the hottest trends in one piece - off the shoulder and pom poms!  I can't wait to pair this with distressed denim or with white jeans.

Monogrammed RingIsn't this a cute statement ring?!  It's hard to believe it's only $68!

Thin BandMy absolute favorite piece of jewelry is a thin, channel set diamond band that I wear on my right ring finger.  I've been on the hunt for a tiny gold band, and this one is under $50!

Sunglasses •  I feel like I'm the only person in the world that doesn't own a pair of Quays!  These offer 100% UV protection and are $50.

Fringe Heels I'm not much of a shoe person, and I wear the same black wedges almost every day because they're comfortable and professional. Since I've started wearing black so frequently, I think these would be a fun addition to my wardrobe!  They have fringe and tassels, and they're $54 with free shipping.

What do y'all think?  See anything you want to add to your wardrobe?  Happy Tuesday, y'all!

Learning to "Long Arm" and Other Blogging Break Adventures

It feels so good to have fresh content on the blog!  The past couple of months have been really chaotic, and my main focus has been just making it from day to day.  I have a lot of posts I'm really excited to share in the upcoming weeks, but first I wanted to do a brief "catching up" post!  For those of y'all who have wondered, here's what I've been up to.

I spent the last weekend in April in South Carolina, then immediately went to Nashville for a week for work!  (This has been my third trip to Nashville in the past three months.  Can I live there yet?)  It was so nice to have a few days of relaxation and limited cell phone service in South Carolina before attending the week long conference.

The highlight of my Nashville trip was getting to meet my blogger bestie Nicole of Chronicling Home!  Our first stop was a visit to Draper James.  Nicole is one of the best shopping buddies I've ever had - she has an eye for picking things for you that you wouldn't necessarily pick for yourself, and she can help you brainstorm multiple ways to wear a piece.  One of the pieces she picked out for me was an LBD that I ended up purchasing to wear to a gala!  I'm convinced it's impossible to leave DJ empty handed.  Nicole left with some super cute accessories.

No trip to Nashville is complete without a visit to Moda Boutique.  I love stopping in to visit with the boutique's owner, Meredith.  She is one bad ass lady, and I always leave there feeling ready to conquer the world.

My brother is ten years younger than me, and I hope when I have kids that they turn out as awesome as he has.  (I like to think they will since I've played second mom to him his whole life.)  I'm so proud of him; he's intelligent, social, athletic, and an all around good kid.  I've spent the majority of my weekends watching him run, break records, and set PR's.  It's incredible.  At the moment, he's the fastest freshman in the state for the open 400. (!!!!)  He has qualified to run at the state meet, and I cannot wait to watch that in a few weeks!

I launched the biggest project of my career last month!  I had been working with a local marketing company since October to create a video that captured the brand of the community I work in, and we ended up getting the final product a day before our  April board meeting.  Y'all, the video went viral!  Within 48 hours, we had 600,000 views and over 4,000 shares.  (To put that in perspective, the counties I serve have a combined population of around 210,000.)  It. was. insane.

For the past ten months, I've had a monthly professional development day with 29 other leaders in my community.  Along with a retreat in a rustic area in North Carolina and a trip to meet with legislators in Nashville, we spent one day a month learning about our community and what makes it work.  That was truly what I expected to gain from the program - a greater understanding of my community.  But at graduation last Thursday, I left with a greater understanding of myself.  The way I view myself and the world around me has changed, and I'm really grateful that my boss gave me the opportunity (and the funding and the time out of the office) to broaden my horizons.

If you've been following along on Snapchat, you probably saw my eyelash extension before and after shots.  My only regret is that I didn't get them sooner.  It was a spontaneous decision, and I'm really pleased with it.  A lot of y'all have asked me to blog about my experience with them, so I plan to do that in the next few weeks. (I don't want to write about it until I get my first "fill in" set.)

This weekend, I went to a gala with my sorority sister and one of our friends from college.  The live auction was giving us anxiety, so we slipped outside and had a photo shoot.  This is when I was introduced to the long arm.  Apparently you hold your arm really loose and natural, and look over your shoulder, kind of toward the ground.  It's a really great pose when you're holding a wine glass an it's semi-dark outside.  It's also really great if you want to spend an entire evening trying to figure out when you got so old and out of touch.

Nailed it ;)

Now that I've managed to share my life story (and lots of poor quality iPhone photos) with y'all, please take a moment and tell me how you've been!  What have you been into?  Let's catch up!

Happy Monday, my friends!  And if you have any long arming tips, please send them my way ;)
