Easter Weekend Recap

Happy Tuesday, y'all!  I don't typically post "Weekend Recap" posts because I realize that no one really cares, but I had an eventful weekend full of wardrobe changes and excitement, so I broke my own rule.

Since it was a long weekend, I guess we'll start with Friday!

A photo posted by Seersucker Sass (@seersuckersass) on

We typically work bank holidays in my office and only take off for things like Christmas and Thanksgiving (which is ironic because of the stereotype that government employees get every holiday off!), but I decided not to go in Good Friday.  I was sore from having biospies taken from my skin on Friday, and it felt nice to not have to wear real clothes for a day as they healed.

I also wrote a really personal post about what had been going on with me health wise.  Thank y'all so much for your kind words and prayers.  I'm impatiently waiting for test results, and I hope to share positive news with y'all soon.

The necklace in the Instagram photo above was a gift from my friend Lauren at Rose Water Designs.  The date is when I was declared cancer free, almost 5 years ago.  If you'd like to order a similar necklace, here's the link!

Saturday turned into a day of many unexpected adventures!  After being inside all day Friday, I needed some fresh air.  I took a quick trip to Ulta, and I had no idea that their 21 Days of beauty was going on.  I ended up picking up Tarte mascara for $10 (!!!) that I'm now obsessed with and a contour stick because I'm a little #obsessed with contouring my face.

From there, I went to my best friend's bridal shower!  I've always loved maxi dresses, but now that my legs and hip have basically been cut all to hell, I'm extra appreciative of the comfort and coverage that they provide.  The maxi I'm wearing is super old Tommy Hilfiger, but I did find a similar dress here and another one here.

If you're looking to be the hit of the bridal shower, I recommend Pottery Barn's Great White Cheese Plate.  I paired it with Marble Cheese Knives because who doesn't love cheese?!  (PS - If you sign up for Pottery Barn emails, you immediately get a 15% off coupon!  Take advantage of that this wedding season!)

While at the bridal shower, I got a text from a former co-worker asking if I wanted to try out the new Escape Room in our community that evening.  It's not open to the public yet, and we ended up being one of two test groups that escaped!  I wasn't sure what to think, but oh my gosh - it was so much fun!!  I loved it, and I can't wait to try out the other three rooms.  (The one that we did was Sherlock Holmes themed.)  It's really neat to see everyone work together as a team, and it gives everyone a chance to let their strengths shine.

Sunday was Easter Sunday, which is one of my favorite days of the year!

Early on Easter Sunday, we made the decision to go to the 8 am mass instead of the 9:30 service because we knew it would be so crowded and neither of us felt great.  I threw on one of my favorite Lilly dresses, threw my hair in a pony tail, and applied my makeup in the car.  I'm so glad that we didn't skip the service like we were contemplating, because it felt like the preacher was preaching to me. I left feeling so full of joy and ready to take on the world!

My favorite thing about 8 am mass is that my day starts earlier, and I leave feeling so ready to be productive.  As soon as I got home, I decided to start working through a devotional that I had really struggled to find time for before.  I ended up reading the first three chapters before going to lunch with my family, and then that evening I started working through Session One of the devotional.  Wow.  Y'all God is really rocking my world through this devotional!  Every morning when I wake up, I'm already excited about doing my devotional when I get home that evening.  If you're looking for a devotional, I highly recommend it.  I started working through the book of Proverbs on Sunday by reading one a day.  If you're interested in following along with me, I'll be reading Proverbs 3 tonight!

(PS - I got that cute little succulent as a gift at Saturday's shower, and I took it to my office with me to sit in the window sill.  I loved it so much that I picked up two more + a cactus last night!)

We met up with my family for Easter lunch, and C was nice enough to take some family photos for us afterwards.  (PS - My brother is 10 years younger than me, but he looks older than me most of the time!)

I'm thankful for a long weekend that was the perfect balance.  There was rest, reflection, and relaxation.  But there was also a lot of activity and time spent with family and friends.

How was your Easter weekend?!

Getting Healthy Hair with Kenra's Plantinum Revive System

Kenra Platinum Collection Review

Exciting news that excites no one but me - I'm growing my hair out... again! Short-ish, blonde-ish hair was fun, but I miss long curls and long braids.  Taking good care of my hair has always been a priority, but now that I want to grow it out and potentially keep coloring it, I know I have to step my game up.

Before trying out the Kenra Platinum collection, I was using lots of different products from different brands.  (Blame the blogger in me, I just love trying new things!)  My mom has always been really into sets.  Her skin care is all from the same brand, her hair care is all from the same brand, and for the longest time, she only used one brand of makeup.  I found this approach to be a little "old school", but now I think she may be on to something.  Think about it... the products in a "set" are made to work together.  While a shampoo may be awesome on it's own, it's probably even more awesome paired with the conditioner that it's formulated to work with.  Because I already use Kenra's Platinum Blow-Dry Spray and love the results, I jumped at the opportunity to try the rest of the collection.

Below are my thoughts on the products that I tried (and that I'm still currently using, if that tells you anything!)  For reference, my hair is naturally oily, color treated, and would be considered long.

Kenra Platinum Collection Review

Kenra Platinum Revive Shampoo •  I like this shampoo a lot.  It's great for oily hair; I only have to use clarifying shampoo one to two times a week now!

Kenra Platinum Revive Conditioner •  What I love about this conditioner is that it's so creamy!  I use it almost every night (unless I deep condition or use a mask), and it keeps the end of my hair smooth and silky.  The ends of my hair became sort of straw-like after my dye job and this has tremendously helped to repair that.

Kenra Platinum Revive Treatment •  I use this as a deep conditioner after I wash my hair!  I apply it to the lower half of my hair (anything that falls below my ears), and let it sit for 5-10 minutes about once a week!  A little bit of this goes a long way, so it should last you for quite awhile.

Kenra Platinum Revive Oil •  This oil is designed to be added in with other Kenra products.  Because my hair is oily, I don't like to use conditioner or a hair mask towards my scalp.  However, I struggle with little fly aways and breakage by the top of my hair.  When I start to have breakage issues, I shampoo my hair, rinse, then put a few drops of oil all over my wet hair.  I add conditioner on top of the oil to the lower half of my hair and let it sit for a few minutes.  Works like a charm!

Kenra Plantium Revive Complex •  I use this as a heat protectant product on days that I'm blow drying my hair but not following up with curling or straightening it.  (When I'm going to curl or straighten, I like to use the blow-dry spray.)  Since coloring my hair, I find heat protection to be an even higher priority than before, and this product really meets that need.

As a whole, I am thoroughly pleased with Kenra products!  They may seem a bit pricy, but I think it's really important to invest in self-care.  I enjoy taking long, luxurious showers every night and doing some self pampering, so to me, the price is worth it!  (PS - It helps that they are available at ULTA and you can use your rewards on them!  That's how I origianlly took the plunge and purchased the blow-dry spray!)

If you have any questions about any of the products, feel free to ask in the comments or shoot me an email - contact(at)seersuckersass(dot)com!

Happy Monday, y'all!  How was your Easter weekend?  I'll be sharing a quick recap of mine tomorrow!

Full disclosure - I was gifted the Kenra Platinum Revive System in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own.  Thanks for supporting brands that support Seersucker Sass!

Weekend Reading + Weekend Sales

Happy weekend, friends!  I was lucky enough to have Friday off work for Good Friday, and it was perfect timing.  I'm so thankful that I had a day to rest, relax, and most importantly, reflect on the meaning of the holiday.  C & I made tuna noodle salad last night, and I'm a little sad that our "fish on Friday" tradition has ended until next year.  I'm really excited about a weekend full of celebrations of faith, family and friends!

Along with sharing my favorite posts of the past few weeks, I wanted to share a list of sales that are currently going on in case you're looking for some spring wardrobe additions.  I've linked to some of my favorites items at the very bottom of the post.

The Importance of Taking Care of Your Skin this Spring

Today's post was supposed to be about shampoo, but it can wait.  Spring is finally here, and I'm so excited about it!  I love spring fashion and warmer weather.  But what I don't love about spring is that it kicks off a season of tanning.  I see so many posts on Facebook about how tan fat looks prettier than pale fat and posts proclaiming that skin cancer isn't a big deal because at least if they die, they'll look pretty in their coffin.  (I wish I was kidding.)

Rose Water Designs Roman Numeral Date Bar Necklace

I'm a melanoma survivor.  On Wednesday, I went for a routine checkup at my dermatologist.  I had a spot on my scalp that I was really concerned about (mostly because it's hard to keep an eye on moles that you can't see), but other than that, I thought it would be a quick visit.  I ended up having three spots taken off.  I've had plenty of moles taken off in my lifetime, but something about having these removed was super painful.  I don't know if it was the location (one on my hip, one on my upper thigh, and one on my lower thigh) or the fact that I'm less than three months away from celebrating five years cancer free, but I can't help but constantly feel nauseous.  I'm squeamish, and I forgot just how gross it was to change the bandages and just how tender the skin is.  I have a lifetime supply of Vaseline and bandages under my sink.  I know this is something that I'll have to deal with for the rest of my life, but I pray that it's something that I never get used to.

When I had a biopsy done on the mole that was cancerous, I had no fear.  I knew the results would be fine.  I wasn't even phased when the general surgeon that did the procedure called me at seven in the evening.  I thought she was thorough, I didn't realize she was breaking bad news.  While I wait for the results, I am preparing myself, because I never want to feel that caught off guard again.  I have a gorgeous necklace with the date that I was deemed cancer free.  It was a gift from my friend Lauren of Rose Water Designs, and I wear it every chance I get.  But now the necklace has taken on a new meaning - it's not just a celebration, but also a reminder that I've done this once, and I can do it again (by the grace of God) if I have to.

I write this post to tell you this - please be good to your skin.  Please wear sunscreen, bonus points for polarized sunglasses and a big floppy hat.  Even if you avoid the sun at all costs, please get your skin checked regularly.  (My melanoma was thought to be a side effect of a medication, but would have been caught much sooner if I was getting regular skin check ups.)

If you have any questions about what it's like to get your skin checked, how to take better care of your skin when it comes to the sun, spray tanning tips, or anything at all, please don't hesitate to reach out to me.  (contact(at)seersuckersass(dot)com)

Have a blessed Easter weekend!

Please note that this isn't a sponsored post.  I shared a photo of the necklace because it has been such a comfort to me, and also because it's a much more appealing and appropriate photo than my wounds and bandages.

Spring has Sprung Gift Bag Tutorial

This shop has been compensated by Collective Bias, Inc. and its advertiser.  All opinions are mine alone.  #FiercelyCleanPores #Collective Bias

As of yesterday, spring is finally officially here!  I don't know about y'all, but this makes me so happy!  I'm ready for sunshine and warmer temperatures, and it's time to make sure my skin is ready for them, as well.  In the winter, I'm not always so great to my skin; I don't always remember to moisturize, and sometimes I skip washing and use a makeup removing wipe instead.  Needless to say, my pores can get pretty clogged up, and it's not pretty.

Last Friday, I decided I'd had enough of having yucky pores and made a Walmart run on my way home from work, bee-lining to the skin care aisle.  I've always loved Bioré products, so when I saw the limited edition Bioré Deep Cleansing Pore Strips, I picked up a couple of boxes.  (The animal print strips on the strips is so fun that I couldn't resist!)

My original intention when visiting Walmart was to pick up some cute little cards to send my three best girlfriends.  I decided to take it a step further and put together some "Spring has sprung" gift bags to mail them!  The goal was to compile a goodie bag of items that would help them update their skincare and beauty routines for spring.

Biore Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

I picked up some colorful bags in the card aisle and then added a bright loofah and a package of makeup removing wipes.  Because of the warmer temperatures, I take makeup removing wipes with me everywhere in the spring and summer.  They're great for freshening up on days when I don't wear makeup, or for touching up a spot where makeup has kind of started to melt off my oily face.  (Hopefully my friends will be better than me and use them only for makeup removing and not to substitute face washing ;) )

Bioré Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

The next step was adding in candy colored nail polish for the perfect spring mani or pedi, hot pink lip balm, and a Bioré mask.

Bioré Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

I saved the best for last, adding Bioré Cleansing Strips to the goodie bags so that my friends could experience fiercely clean pores!  The strips work like a magnet by instantly locking onto and removing deep-down dirt, oil, and blackheads so that you get the deepest clean.  Continued use will visibly reduce the appearance of pores.  If that's not enough, I'm seriously obsessed with the limited edition zebra and cheetah print packaging.

Bioré Deep Cleansing Pore Strips

Voila!  Just like that, you have a "Spring has sprung" gift bag to send to your closest friends.  (Or keep for yourself... no judgement here!)

If you're interested in creating your own gift bags, or just want to try out Bioré Cleansing Strips, the photo below is a great resource on where to find them at your local Walmart!  (Please be aware that they are only available at Walmart, and the animal print is limited edition so scoop them up while you can!)

Easter Dress Round Up

As a child, I thought Easter was the greatest thing ever.  I got a new dress, new white patent shoes, and a little white bonnet to wear to church, and all of the older women would ooh and ahh at us in our Easter attire.  After church, the ladies in my family would prepare a Southern feast, which was followed by presentation of Easter baskets and an Easter egg hunt.

As I've grown older and grown in my faith, I've realized what Easter is truly about.  I look forward to church on Easter Sunday to hear the message of the resurrection of Christ.  And while I know that Jesus couldn't care less what I wear to church, I enjoy getting a new Easter dress and getting a little more dressed up than usual to take part in the celebration!

I typically wear a Lilly dress for Easter, but as the hemlines creep a little higher each season, I think I'll be picking something a little more church appropriate this year.  (And the store was closed when I went to buy my Easter dress.  Haha  #storyofmylife)  My taste in Easter dresses is typically very traditional, so if we share that trait, I think you will enjoy the picks below!  With the exception of the Lilly dresses, everything is under $150.  I typically splurge a little bit on my Easter dress, just because spring fever is getting the best of me and I know I can wear it to at least one wedding shower and one wedding.  Happy shopping, my friends!

See anything you like?  What are your Easter traditions?

PS - Don't forget about the upcoming Spring Fling Linkup!
