Resolution to Reality - Drinking More Water

One of my New Year's Resolutions was to drink more water.  I want to look healthier, and I want to feel healthier.  Yesterday I tweeted that I felt horrible because I hadn't drank any water, and I usually drink six glasses by four PM.  This led to lots of questions about how I drink that much water in a day, which made me all excited because I love when people ask me questions.  (They inspire the best blog content!)

I had planned on writing blog posts about how I'm tackling each of my resolutions, so it worked out perfectly!  If drinking more water or getting healthier was one of your New Year's Resolutions, then I hope you find this post to be helpful!

Use a tumbler.  This sounds crazy, but I drink so much water when it's in a cute tumbler.  Maybe it's something about it having a straw?  Or that it's 16 ounces, so I don't have to refill it as often?  My mom bought me this one for Christmas, and it is basically one of my accessories at this point because I take it everywhere with me.  If you're in college, I highly recommend this Camelbak bottle.  It has a filter, so you can fill up with sink or water fountain water and not feel like you're going to die.

Infuse.  The thing that has helped me the most is infusing my water.  I keep sliced oranges and cucumbers and frozen cranberries in the fridge at home and at work, so that all I have to do in the morning is throw them in my tumbler, add some ice cubes, and fill it up with water.  It takes the same amount of time it would take for me to make a cup of coffee on the Keurig.

Make drinking water convenient.  I buy my fruit and cucumbers over the weekend, slice it all up, and store it in a container in the fridge so that whenever I need it, it's there and there's no work involved.  I also don't keep soda in my fridge at home.  I have a few Diet Cokes in the pantry in case I need one, but because they're not in plain sight, I'm a lot less likely to grab one of them.

Apps.  I use apps to hold myself accountable and track how much water I'm drinking.  Another awesome thing about using an app is that it helps to determine how much water you should drink.  I really like Daily Water because I'm a visual person, and you just click on a glass of water after you've drank it.  My friend Courtney told me about Plant Nanny, and it's cute because when you drink water, it helps your little virtual plant grow.  It also sends reminders or tells you to slow down if you're drinking too much water at once.

By making this one change in my life, and actually getting into a routine and succeeding at it, I've been really inspired to take more control of my health!  After some discussion last night, my boyfriend and I have decided to cut back on the amount of dairy and gluten that we consume and see if we notice any changes in our health.

How are you coming along on your New Year's Resolutions?  I want to hear all about it!

Happy Friday!  I'm so excited because Annaliese is coming to visit me this weekend!

  1. Three years ago, I committed to drinking more water and less of soda. I haven't had a sip of soda since. I've seen such a difference through drinking more water. I have more energy, my skin is clearer, and I just feel much better. I love having cute water bottles and tumblers everywhere. I may have a little collection going on.

  2. Water is one of my least favorite things to drink. Why can't it taste more like sweet tea?! haha But these are all great tips!

  3. I find drinking water through a straw also helps me drink more of it! I am right there with you on needing a lot of water to feel good. I usually drink 70-90 ounces a day.

  4. Having a cute tumbler really helps! And I also infuse mine with cucumber, it tastes so good. But I'm bad for drinking water, I definitely need to drink more.

  5. I haven't drank cokes on a regular basis in almost 19 years (since I was a sophomore in high school). For me, when I realized how many empty calories and sugar are in soft and fruit drinks it made me not want to drink them at all.

  6. These are all great tips!
I always grab waterbottles now from the back room instead of soda. I allow myself one per day.

  8. Great post! I have been trying to up my H20 intake as well. Your first tip - using a tumbler is SPOT ON. On days I use mine, I drink WAY more. I don't know if it's because it's convenient or in a cup cup, haha. Either way, I totally agree! Xoxo, Mindy

  9. I have been working on drinking more water as well! I have found that if I have water in my tumblr around I'll most likely sip on it through out the day vs having water in a regular cup. Weird? Maybe. Does it work? Yes. haha. Hope you're having a good day!

  14. I feel like drinking more water is something everyone can work on. I find that I drink a lot of water at work but then when I get home I barely touch it. I'm glad that your resolutions/goals for the New Year are going great! I've been doing a great hobby of embracing and making more time for the creative hobbies I really enjoy, I've noticed it has made a difference in my overall mood so far this year.

  16. I use the waterlogged app to help me drink more water. I love that you can take a picture of your favorite cups so you can track those specifically. I also love La Croix sparkling water! My favorites are the Cran-Raspberry and the Grapefruit.

  18. I have to get back into drinking more water. When I am at school I drink it a lot more because I am too broke to constantly buy soda lol, but at home when I am on break it's a lot easier to drink soda. I definitely agree with the tumbler comment, I seem to drink more water when it's in something cute too.

  19. I always find it so hard to drink a lot of water. So what I do is I don't buy anything else to drink at all and since I work from home it's so easy. I also keep lemons in the fridge and slice a few and add to my bottle or glass of water.

  21. I live by my filtered water bottle at school! Like you said, the water fountains are so gross, you don't even want me to get started on what I saw in my water one time...
